This morning I travelled to England’s second city Birmingham and watched day five’s morning session of the 2026 European Athletics Championships. As a wheelchair user visiting a stadium like the Alexander Stadium when there are thousands of spectators around can be very challenging.
Due the venue being a vehicle free zone because for the championships I had to wheel from a playing field a short distance away from the site to access the venue like all of the other spectators.
Once on site it was fairly easy to get inside the venue and find my wheelchair accessible seats that were alongside the long and triple jump pits on the opposite side of the track to the finish line.
The action on track and in the field included the following, Hepthatlon 100 meters Hurdles heats, Women’s Javelin Throw, Men’s Pole Vault, Hepthatlon High Jump, Women’s 4 x 400 Meters Relay round 1, Men’s 1500 Meters.
I was really excited about the relay’s and the Men’s Pole Vault competition because that featured Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis who holds the current world record in the event which is a vault of 6 meters 31 that was set by him in March this year.
Also I was excited about seeing the Hepthatlon High Jump because that featured Great Britain star Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who is of course an household name in both British and European Hepthatlon.
Much to my delight both Mondo and Katarina delivered in their respective events and that was some great viewing for spectators including myself.
On the whole my experience at the event was a positive one, here is hoping that it is repeated when I visit the championships once again in Birmingham tomorrow evening.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the volunteers who I came across today whilst at the championships, you were all incredibly supportive and ensured that I had everything needed to enjoy my day out. This support definitely did not go unnoticed and was of course very much appreciated.
