This evening I travelled to England’s second city Birmingham and watched day Six’s evening session of the 2026 European Athletics Championships in the VIP section of the stadium. As a wheelchair user visiting a stadium like the Alexander Stadium when there are thousands of spectators around can be very challenging.
Due the venue being a vehicle free zone because of the championships I had to take a shuttle bus from a car park which was around a 25 minute drive away from the stadium.
Once on site it was fairly easy to get inside the venue and find the hospitality wheelchair accessible seats which were alongside the home straight of the track and on the opposite side to the long and triple jump pits , where I was sitting yesterday morning.
After having the honour of officially starting the session, it was finally time to sit back and relax whilst watching the action on the track and in the field which included, the Hepthatlon 800 Meters, Men’s Javelin Throw, Women’s High Jump, Women’s 400 Meters, Men’s Triple Jump, Men’s 10,000 Meters, Men’s 1500 Meters, Men’s 4 x 100 Meters Relay and the Women’s 4 x 100 Meters Relay.
I was very excited to see the conclusion of the Women’s Hepthatlon event having witnessed some of the events during the previous morning’s session at the event.
Tonight was another really positive experience and one that I will not forget in a very long time.
