As those of you reading this will know I was a vip for the evening session of the European athletics championships at the Alexander stadium in Perry Barr, Birmingham last night after being named a local hero by the championships’s organisers.
Once I had received my award on the track and spend some time in one of the stadiums vip lounges it was finally time to take my seat and watch the action unfold on the track and in the field.
An hour before the session was due to finish I decided that it would be a good Idea to head to the toilet as it was going to be quite a long journey home from the second city.
After struggling to find an accessible toilet on the concourse I eventually asked one of the stewards where they were, the gentlemen I asked pointed them out to me, however both of the ones I went to were locked which I was not surprised by to be honest.
The steward then advised me that it would be around 10 minutes before they were able to unlock one of the two toilets so that I could use them, I was then advised by him to use the accessible cubicle within the unisex toilets.
However the so called accessible cubicles within the unisex toilets were not accessible to me and I had no other choice but to leave my wheelchair outside the door and shut it sightly without being able to actually lock it.
My message to the event organisers of the 2026 European athletics championships is a clear one and this, please tell the stewards at the stadium not to advise members of the disabled community to use the so called accessible cubicles in the main toilets on the concourses as they are not accessible for wheelchair or mobility scooter users.
I have been left shocked by the experience that I had when using the facilities, especially on a night where I was supposed to be celebrating my achievements of recent weeks, months and of course years.
If any wheelchair or mobility scooter users attending the final session of the Championships this evening want to use the toilet whilst in the stadium I would urge them to ask the stewards to get hold of the keys to the accessible toilets on the concourses throughout the stadium.
Do not use the cubicles within the unisex toilets, they aren’t accessible!!!!!!
