Hopefully the blue and white boxes saying “ for mobility assistance, please wait here” will feature on the platforms at Perry Barr railway station in time for the UK Athletics Championships next year.

A few weeks or so ago I asked the accessibility team at West Midlands Railway if the waiting spaces are accompanying signage could be installed on the platforms at Perry Barr railway station in Birmingham.

In response to asking if it was a possibility they (the operator) said that “ it hasn’t specifically been spoken of, but it can be considered”.

The blue and white boxes which feature a white wheelchair logo along with the words “ for mobility assistance, please wait here would be perfect for the station’s platforms.

This is because the area is home to the Alexander Stadium at hosts large scale athletics meets like the UK Athletics Championships and most recently the European Athletics championships.

Whilst the European athletics championships were in thousands of spectators used Perry Barr station when travelling to and from the event both in the mornings and evenings across the seven days of competition.

Hopefully the accessibility tools will in place before the UK Athletics Championships takes place at the stadium in the summer of 2027.

As this would allow those attending the event with disabilities or mobility issues to travel by with ease if they wish to do so.

Since January 2024 over 30 railway stations managed by the operator have seen the introduction of the tools including ones that are near to major sports venues like Villa Park and the CBS Arena.

Sporting events both here in the Midlands and the wider country should be accessible to all, which has not always been the case as I know too well.

It is only right that I take the opportunity to thank the accessibility team at the operator for their work in ensuring that our community are able to travel ease and confidence across the next they manage.

Your support has not gone unnoticed and is of course very much appreciated and always will be.
