Over the weekend I was forgotten about by a bus driver after arriving at my chosen destination and contacted the public transport team at the local authority in Herefordshire about the incident.
In the last few hours or so a member of the council’s public transport has responded to my email about the incident on the weekend by saying, ” From the information provided, this appears to have been a genuine oversight on the part of the driver rather than any intentional action. We can assure you that drivers are expected to take care of all passengers, including those requiring assistance, and we recognise that on this occasion this did not happen as it should have”.
” We will make the operator aware of the incident and ask that they remind drivers of the importance of checking for passengers who may require assistance when alighting, particularly wheelchair users and other passengers with accessibility needs.”
To say that I am delighted with the council’s dealing of this matter is an understatement and I really hope that the operator in question learns from the incident and does not allow it to happen again in the future.
Traveling by bus as a wheelchair user is hard at the best of times, let alone when we are using buses independently and are forced to rely on the support of the driver when either boarding or disembarking the vehicle.

It is only right that I take the opportunity to thank the team at the council who could have quite easily dismissed my concerns and not dealt with them as swiftly as they have.
