Travelling by rail to a T20 International in the welsh capital of Cardiff between England and Sri Lanka as a wheelchair user can be an enjoyable experience.

In last 24 hours or so I have travelled by rail to the welsh capital and watched a T20 International between England and Sri Lanka at Sophia Gardens cricket ground.

As a wheelchair user travelling to live sport events across the nation as become somewhat second nature to me in recent years after visiting various grounds during the 2022 Women’s Football European Championships which were of course hosted by England.

I normally head to Edgbaston in the second city of Birmingham to watch International cricket matches with West Midlands Railway who operator most of the line between Hereford and Birmingham New Street railway station.

On this occasion as I would be heading to the welsh capital, Cardiff and Sophia Gardens, Transport for Wales was the operator of choice as they operator on the railway line between Cardiff Central and Manchester Piccadilly which stops in Hereford along the way.

Over the last few years I haven’t really had that many issues whilst travelling with the operator (Transport for Wales), so I was not really worried about my return journey between the two nations, England and Wales.

Having arrived at Hereford railway station for the 10:35 service from Hereford to Cardiff Central, yesterday morning, I was able to board the train with ease because I am very familiar with the staff and station with it being my home one.

Getting to Cardiff and off the train was again done with relative ease which also was the case when I arrived back at the station in Cardiff for my train home just after 7am this morning, Friday September the 18th 2026.

My message to the staff at both railway stations (Hereford and Cardiff Central), is a clear but simple one and this, thank you from the bottom of my heart for ensuring that I was able to get to and from Cardiff safely and with ease for last night’s T20 International at Sophia Gardens.

Your support to achieve this goal has not gone unnoticed and is of course and always will be very much appreciated.

I would like to take the opportunity to remind all those with accessibility needs that you can travel by train and other public transport methods to live sport events across the nation with ease.

Things can go wrong when using these types of methods to attend events and this is where I urge to speak and be heard by those responsible for managing the operation of the systems as members of our (the disabled) community.

Together we can make attending live sport enjoyable for all regardless of individual needs.

Finally, thank you to each and everyone of you my regular loyal readers and social media followers who continually take the time out of your busy schedules to read my latest posts, it does not go unnoticed and is of course as always very much appreciated.
