Dating with a disability in 2026 after years of heartbreak really has changed my outlook on the subject.

As many of you reading this right now will know dating with a disability can be incredibly challenging because in my experience people only see the wheelchair or disability and not you as a person.

A few years ago I shared my dating with a disability journey one of which that was heartbreaking due to the way I was treated by an ex partner that I was with for a number of years after meeting them at college as a 17 year old.

Being physically and mentally abused by the person did really make me question if dating was for me as a wheelchair user.

However recently my outlook surrounding the subject changed following a period of using dating apps so I could finally find some happiness, interestingly a few weeks ago that actually happened when I got talking to a girl (who I will not name) on a dating app.

Living a few hours apart from each other has not been easy however I have always said that I would prefer not to date or be in a relationship with somebody that I live quite close to because in my experience there is an expectation to see each other on a regular basis.

I had this challenge earlier this year and unfortunately it did not end well, because of things that were out of my control. With Christmas being just 7 weeks away it time for me to find some happiness so that the festive season is an enjoyable one.

However that difficult experience is 100% behind me and I now feel able to look forward and enjoy what my future has in store for me as someone who lives with Cerebral Palsy and uses a wheelchair to navigate everyday life.

An inter-abled relationship is something that I have always wanted, for those of you who don’t know what one of these relationships is here is the definition in my own words, an inter-abled relationship is one where a person has a disability and the other person does not.

My message to the disabled community surrounding the subject of dating is this, dating with a disability of any sort can be extremely challenging but I can assure you that there is somebody out there for everyone, but it might take you some time to find them.

Trying dating apps doesn’t always work for everyone so dating someone who you know or from your home town or county is 100% okay, remember there is not wrong or right way when it comes to dating when you have a disability.

” All good things come to those who wait”, that is something I completely believe in and always will for the rest of my life.
