Berlin: one of the most accessible places for wheelchair users in Europe.

I visited the German capital, Berlin from the 26th to the 30th of October, 2024 and as a wheelchair user I wasn’t sure what to expect from this beautiful city.

Travelling by air as a wheelchair user has its challenges but British Airways made the experience both there and back easy and enjoyable once on board.

My visits to the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust memorial and the Olympic stadium were incredible and things that I will never forget.

Politics is a passion of mine so getting to visit the Reichstag which is the German version of the Palace of Westminster was most definitely a high light of my year so far.

The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most famous landmarks in Germany and it was somewhere that I was desperate to visit whilst in the city.

A poignant moment occurred on the second day of the visit when I visited Topography of Terror where I Iearn’t all about what happened during Hitler’s regime.

On the final day before heading home the following morning I toured the olympic stadium which hosted the 2024 European championship final between Spain and England that was attended by FA President, the Prince of Wales.

As a wheelchair user the public transport system was an important factor of the holiday being a success and I am not ashamed to say that in most places it put the United Kingdoms network to shame.

There was an occasion during the trip where I was forced to travel up an escalator in my wheelchair due to a broken lift at an underground station with the support of family members.

On the whole it was the break that I needed to recharge my batteries, sorry for the really bad pun so I would definitely recommend the city to any wheelchair users who would like to visit a very accessible European destination.

A number of types of public transport can be found across Berlin that are completely accessible to those visitors who have access requirements, there are some tubes that you will need the support of the train driver to board.

However there also trains that are classed as step free access like the ones that can be found on the Elizabeth line in London at stations across Berlin.
