Those of you reading this will know by now that I love going to concerts in the Midlands and have to stay in hotels overnight following the concerts because of the accessibility requirements that I have.
This might not be possible from now on after the Chancellor of the Exchequer imposed tax on hotel rooms in this afternoon’s autumn budget.
In the hours leading up to the announcement I booked a hotel stay for June the 4th 2026 in Birmingham when I head to the Utillita Arena and see Dermot Kennedy.
An accessible room with Premier Inn for the night would have set me back £129, however Travelodge were only charging £82.99 for a similar room which I find very interesting.
As someone who has a disability I am unable to stay in accommodation like Air B&B’s or apartments for nights away like these, so slapping tax on to the cost of a hotel room will stop me from affording them.
My message to the Chancellor, Prime Minister and there government is a clear but simple one and this, “accessible accommodation is very difficult to source when planning nights away with friends or family, slapping tax onto hotel rooms will force people like myself to think again when booking concert tickets for artists like Dermot Kennedy”.
“it is not my fault that I can only be safe in accommodation like hotels when away with friends and family because of the support needs that I have as a result of my disabilities, in my view this will have a massive impact on our community from now on which isn’t fair.
“Please rethink this now and not in the coming weeks and months when it will be too late for our community”.
Earlier this week I wrote a pre budget blog which can be found here: https://just-being-cp.co.uk/2025/11/24/as-someone-living-with-cerebral-palsy-and-hydrocephalus-i-am-ready-to-be-forgotten-about-in-2025-autumn-budget-this-week/, for anyone who is interested in reading my thoughts before the announcement.
