The wheelchair that I use to navigate daily life after being born at 25 weeks, weighing just half a bag of sugar in the August of 1996 is not funded by the “pocket money” that I receive from the Department for Work and Pensions on a monthly basis.
As I have said on numerous occasions in recent weeks and months when talking about this very subject ” people like me rely on these funds to live as independently as we possibly can, without it life would be 10 times harder for us to navigate”.
Second reading of the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment bill which took place on July the 1st 2025 passed with 335 MP’s voting in favour and 260 voting against it.
In the last few hours the third reading of the bill has taken place in the House of Commons with 336 MPs voting in favour and 242 voting against it, meaning that it will now progress forward onto the House of Lords.

Angry and disappointed are not the words to describe how I am feeling on behalf of the entire disabled community right now who have in some cases claimed the benefits for as long as they can remember, the next generation of disabled children and young people are about to enter the fights of there lives.
It was reported by mainstream media outlets over the weekend that the Secretary of State for Education and her department are considering abolishing Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP’s) for thousands of children and young people who currently rely on the support.
“This is just another fight we are about to undertake as a community and we will win it by simply saying “NO”, we are not here to be messed with”.
If you would like to read my full reaction to the possibility of the government abolishing EHCP’s, it can be found here: https://just-being-cp.co.uk/2025/07/07/if-i-did-not-have-a-statement-whilst-in-the-early-years-of-education-things-would-have-been-10-times-harder-to-navigate/
My message to the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer and Liz Kendall the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions is a clear but simple one and is this, “This evening our worst nightmare has been realised. Our ( the disabled) community will now be wondering how they are going to live their best lives and pay for things like repairs to mobility aids’.
” This should never have been a disability lottery as those claiming Personal Independence Payment will have a legitimate reason for receiving the payments”
” As I have said in previous posts on this subject I really do hope that you (the government) will consult organisations working with those who have disabilities and disabled people themselves about any proposed changes to the welfare state going forward”

I would like to thank Jesse Norman the MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire and Ellie Chowns who represents the people of North Herefordshire for once voting against the bill, it hasn’t gone unnoticed by our community in the county and is very much appreciated.
